Dear Friends,

A recompilation on Daniel Michieli emails with the latest recently received.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WELCOME - Daniel Carrizo

Nigel Boos

Thursday, June 19, 2008 7:53:42 AM

Dear Daniel,

Thank you very much for getting back to me, and for giving me so many details of your life story.

It is good to hear from you.

You have called a lot of names, for some of which we have email addresses.

I thought that I might be interesting for some of your old school friends to hear from you, and therefore I am copying this message to them as well, in case they should wish to contact you.

I have no idea where Anzoategui is, and where so many of the Venezuelan Old Boys of the Mount might live in relation to your State, and because it is possible that some of them might not be too far from you, I'm copying this to them as well.

So, you might be quite surprised to hear from one or other of our Venezuelan Old Boys. Please let me know if anyone does contact you.

For the past number of years, Ladislao Kertesz (Class of 1960) has been spearheading an effort to bring together all the Old Boys of Mt. St. Benedict through the facility of email connection, and he has been very successful in sending out Circular letters from time to time, (weekly), and stimulating others to get involved.

He has been ably helped, initially, by Anthony Johnson (California, USA) and by Don Mitchell (Anguilla, Caribbean Sea), who has set up and maintained a weblog.

For my part, I am simply trying to develop a database of all the Old Boys of the Abbey School, with their email addresses, to allow ease of contact.

I shall shortly be sending out another update to the database, and you shall receive it for the first time.

It's good to have you on board, and once again, thanks for contacting us.

Nigel Boos

Good night.

At this side is writing Daniel Roberto Michieli Carrizo, 48 years old, 1967 class.

I was in Abbey School since September 1967 until December 1969 (form 1, form 2 and one trimester of form 3).

I returned to Venezuela because of a familiar big problem.

Since then, I don't remember a contact with friends (students, teachers or priests from Abbey School), and I am very happy of having this moment.

I remember of my class Alfredo Montiel, Coscarat Brothers, Jose Costa, Frank Ibarra, Felipe Dáger, Simón Dáger, Oscar Cantore, Winston Cabello, Carlos Carabańo, José Antonio Luongo, Moffie Brothers, and from others classes Zanella (remember Aqualads), Carlos Malavé (leader of my boyscout group, I was the assistant), Franklin Malavé (captain of Saint Lawrence football teams).

I can remember Mr Sheldon Gomes (our football trainer), Mr Chow Fatt (geometry teacher), Brother Frederick (chemistry teacher; he after left the Abbey because he chose to get married with a very pretty girl).

Remember Cutty (Father Cuthbert), Bobo (Father Bernard, the principal), Father Theo (he went to Holland in my second year).

I remember the bus driver when we went to play vs Arima High School, football, and we lost; he said that the only good thing we had was the colour, because all of us were white.

Six months later there was a big race problem in Trinidad; civil troubles called The Black Power.

After that (January 1970) I didn't know anything of Trinidad and the Abbey School, Until today.

At this moment I have a big family; my wife (a very good woman, a black woman; a marriage of 30 years), 2 sons (27;12), 2 daughters (24; 16) and 2 grand-daughters (3;1).

I am a physician (paediatrician and paediatric intensives) working in Lechería, Estado Anzoátegui, Venezuela, and I am very glad to enter in this new-old circle of friends.

Perhaps we could meet someday, sometime, and could have a good time, a good and long conversation.

Greetings to all of you, my brothers.

Good night to all of you.

I had my PC turned off for many days and today I have had the great pleasure of reading many messages of old friends from Abbey School.

I hope that all of you, and your families, are finding happy, together, in very good health, working hard and fulfilling all the wishes you could have (a little difficult in our current Venezuela, by now).

I will try to make time to read and answer all the mails, on time.

Greetings.

To Dr Bratt: If I go to Port of Spain in anytime be sure I'll look for you, to go up Abbey School; it's a deal. Thanks .

Thank you Nigel,

I also will do the same, for any of my brothers if I am close enough, that’s why I sent around this email, because so many have already expressed this in so many ways.

Nigel, before I forget, Rico Beekhoo called me a few days ago, his phone number is Toronto 647-340-4629, he's divorced, 3 young kids, he is doing well now,

He made me laugh for an hour, some stories I can't write will have to tell you when I see yuh.

He was the first boy to wear short pants on the mount, that year is also the first year we grew our hair long, the year was 1969, that is when Rico, and his buddies Nathanial Sampath, he is in Orlando, and Gangaram Rampersad is in New Jersey.

This is all the info I have on these guys for now.

Best regards

Glen

It would be a privilege for me to be asked to help you, at any time.

God grant that I might find it always possible to come to the help of one of my brothers or sisters.

Count me in.

I looked in the phone book and saw one listing for David Sampath,

His wife answered and told me they are from Trinidad and David also went to MSB in the 60's, the guy lives 2 miles up the street from me on the same road, can you believe that?

She said he is coming back from Trinidad tonight and will give me a call tomorrow.

I will keep you posted.

Hello Jan,

You might get a good deal in France, for a 2nd home, that´s excellent, England is astronomical, my brother-in-laws live in England, I could not afford to live in England.

Lots of Germans already bought up the coast line of Nova Scotia.

Jan, I did not have great grades in poetry, I only write for the Club.

My wife was amazed that I could write so much, honest I write because I am inspired to write for the Club, which means so much to me.

France is a nice place to disappear, beautiful landscapes. good investment.

Take care my friend, and I thank you for your emails.

Glen.

Have been away to France for a while, I see I am quite behind with my mails.

You did well in the band in Surinam.

Indeed it is Par'bo beer.

The company was founded in Paramaribo in 1954 by two Dutch brothers from Netherlands.

They were close friends to my parents and we played with their children when we were young.

But you had some adventures with girls in Surinam.

Maybe it was because you played in the band, because I was not so lucky that girls would come to me and take me out.

This real estate thing is nice to do.

I work as an architect in Holland.

Been to France to look for a fine lot to buy as a second home.

You know, some old farmhouse with a piece of land.

They are very cheap in France and Germany compared to Holland.

One house Holland is good for a little farm of 20000 sq meters in France and Germany.

Glen, you amaze me each time, you are a great writer and I think you got high grades in poetry.

Poetry is for me something I don't understand well.

They say you have to read the letters and get the feeling, but I don't feel anything.

Much greetings,

Jan Koenraadt

Dear Jan,

Thank you for such an informative reply.

Here in Canada, people are buying old churches and changing them into Condos etc.. and Dance halls and different things.

The young, are not too committed to any thing now, so the church will be the hardest hit.

I think the Irish, are the only ones who are exporting priest, all over the world.

However the Mount where we attended, is prime real estate, and could have the most expensive Condos on top that hill, like a place for the very wealthy, movie stars or dignitaries.

Right now, some of the rich from Canada buys places in Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic.

A friend of mine, has an engineering firm, here in Nova Scotia, he is building us 5 million dollars condos, in Cayman islands, there for developers,

The cayman islands are arid and dry, hardly any trees, but these people will spend a lot of money for privacy and seclusion.

My friend said they even bring down there a Ferrari, as he also owns one.

I hope the Mount will survive, however, every boarder would like to see the Mount remain the same, in the end, we are the only people who really care, about the Abbey school building, and in the end we may be its last hope, I hope it does not come to that, I do not think their are enough of us to keep it.

However there are a few of us, that could turn it into a profit, but like anything, it takes money to make money, right.?

Suriname , we also went to the World Scout Jamboree there , in what year??

I can't remember, the girls loved us, I was captain of the mount band, Cosmic Vibes, we played for like 30,000 people or more it was awesome man.

We were on the radio, we also played in the Hotel, we ruled man, ask Fr. Cuthbert

These girls picked us up on motorcycles, took us to the country club there, and partied, then to there houses for meals.

We wanted to live there, man, funny thing in Suriname, any time you played a song, you had to repeat it the same song again, what's with that??

We would drink from these big beer bottles, I think Parbo??

Oh Jan, thanks for bringing back those memories,

Tim and many of the boys who were there, must be smiling now.

Thank you again for your time, best regards

Glen.

Jan, I think any trip to China is an experience,

I have a good friend here, he is a school principle, he is now in the process of open a school in China to teach English, and he is so excited about this part of his life, we are around the same age, but I don't know if I want to go through all that again.

I like to try to take life a little more relaxed, where I do what I want to do.

Your son is very athletic, did he get it from his father ??

I had a neighbour next door, he ran the Boston marathon, his son also runs now, and the two of them ran the Boston marathon, he ran around on the his wife also, now only the wife lives next door, ha! ha!

Well I just made breakfast for when the wife gets up,

later Glen.

Glen,

These are nice pictures.

It is as if you are all ready at the Olympics.

My eldest son is going to the Olympics in China in august.

He already got his entrance ticket to the Opening Ceremony of the Olympics.

China only gave away a few entrance permits to each country.

My son was among the first ten, so he got one.

But I will send him your attachment, so he can prepare his stomach for the food he is going to get.

Last month he ran the 42km marathon in Vienna in Austria for which he trained two year.

He lives in Munchen and will run the Munich marathon coming September too.

This way he has a good appetite for all that food!

Much greetings,

Jan Koemraadt

In France the weather was like summer, we could walk with short sleeves and short pants. But in Holland it is bad weather again, cold and windy. I hate it. Going back soon again. If you don't receive replies then I am away southeast France/Germany border.

Caracas, 13 September 2008 No. 358

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Friends,

Another thought:

After so many years writing the Circular I noticed that many of you have kept some of classmates as friends, also you have been integrated in your friend´s family, through marriage or other family arrangements.

I have added new email addresses just by looking through the addresses that you send to me.

This is OK but maybe you can help actively by FW the Circulars to known ALUMNI, specially from your family group, as you might not know if your parent or friend is receiving the Circular.

Nigel Boos and myself are missing close to 1000 e-mail address, please help us.

We would like to leave a record as the official records have been misplaced.

Dear Trevor,

Finally the package arrived.

Very good photos.

You talk about memory, yours still has a long way to go.

Even the spelling of the names is accurate.

Out of all the names, do you know where some of them went after graduating?

I have some of the addresses, I shall make a list soon and send them to you and the rest of the guys of your group.

Maybe we can hear from some more alumni, some long forgotten.

None of those mentioned were there when I arrived in Sept. 1955.

What is the story on the bikes?, were they provided by the school??

What colour?.

Why were not all wearing scouting uniform.?

The van at the back, did it also take the tour?.

Any flat tyres?.

Why all the back pack?

Would the kids have been in Form V?

Did you ride up the hill?, down must have been easy!!.

Who was the priest who accompanied the caravan?, must likely he rode the van !!

Thank you again

God Bless

Ladislao

I did not send the hand written words by Email because it would have a few months as you remember in one of Arthur Knaggs notes he said that I was computer Challenged so be it, I only started to use one at age 74, so it will take a little time to get with it.

Ladislao,

Just a few notes on my association with Mount St. Benedict.

When I arrived for the first time on April 22, 1945 the School had only just opened, we were about 35 students.

We were housed in the building at the bottom of the path to the new School on the hill top, the new school was being built.

Some of the names I remember are:

Arneaud Big,

Bettencourt Gomes Clive,

Blanc Nobby,

Cribbs Dennis,

Darwent John,

Darwent Michael,

Ferguson Duncan,

Gomes Tony,

Gomes Vitales,

Gonsalves Brian,

Jardim Tonny,

Knaggs Arthur.

Knaggs Jack,

Marcelin Hamil,

Miller J.D.,

Prada Charles,

Soodeen Scipio,

Willems John,

Willems Anthony.

At that time the playing field was not complete and we used to go down and dig with pickaxes to make larger on the hillside.

It was quite a lot of fun, this was done on weekends, Saturday and Sunday.

The teachers at the time were:

Fr. Asnelm,

Fr. Basil,

Fr. Bernard,

Fr. Ildefonse,

Fr. John,

Fr. Leesingh,

Fr. Leo,

Fr. Paul,

Fr. Peter.

Br Anthony was involved with us but cannot remember in what capacity, he never became a priest, he ended up as an OBLATE of St. Benedict.

His mother Mrs. Murray owned an estate in Tobago where we went for the first Summer in 1945.

Perhaps I should give you the names of the Priests at that time before I forget:

Fr. Adelbert,

Fr. Asnelm,

Fr. Basil,

Fr. Bede,

Fr. Bernard,

Fr. Ildefonse,

Fr. John,

Fr. Leesingh

Fr. Leo,

Fr. Paul,

Fr. Peter,

Fr. Prior.

Lay Brothers

Br. Babriel Construction

Br. Bruno Chickens and Farm

Br. James Workshop

Br. Michael Backery Infirmary

Br. Raphael Bees, Honney

Lay Boys studying to be priests: They assorted with us for sport:

Mathew Fred

Mendes Emanuel

Mendes John

Patience Fred

Philip Raymond

I cannot remember the names of the Brothers who were Deacons and Sub Deacons.

The only one was Fr. Cuthbert.

It is pretty difficult to remember things and names that are 61 years ago.

I am sending this to you because if I tried to send by email, I would be around 1 year, as Art Knaggs mentioned in one of your letter I am computer slow.

Here are some of the names when I arrived at Mount in April of 1945:

Ache Adrien

Arneau Big

Betthencourt Gomes Clive

Blanc Allan

Blanc Nobby

Cribbs Denis

Darwent John

Darwent Micheal

Darwent Walter

Ladislao,

I am wondering if there is a cost for all you are doing for us old boys, if so I think it is time we all antied up I am sure that most would be willing to contribute.

Please let me know what I can do to assist in the cost of your efforts, cost of paper ink etc.

Enjoy the info although I do not know the names or faces of the students that came after me.

Arthur,

To my knowledge the boarding school started in 1944.

I believe the first students were John Darwent, John Mendes, J.D. Miller, Emanuel Mendes, Stanley Raymond Matthews no first name Jack Knaggs

The bunch from Guyana arrived on April 22nd 1945.

We were housed in the building at the bottom of the path leading to the new school.

In that building was Br. Michael and his backery next to that was the refectory ?

The classes were held in the 2 buildings accross from there. .

I remember the names of some of the ones in 1945: Tony Gomes, Scipio Soodeen Charles Prada, who went AWL and caused quite a stir.

Clive Bettencourt Gomes, John Willems, Anthony Willems, Brian Gonsalves, Bunny Gonsdalves, Terence Gonsalves, David Serrao, Hamil Marcelin, BIG Arneau, cannot remember his first name.

My brain hurts can go no further.

I tried hope this helps

Pictures at MSB around 1948

Monday, February 25, 2008 4:29:46 PM

Gentlemen,

You are the oldest group of Mt. St. Benedict "Old Boys" for whom I have any email addresses, and I am coming to you for some help, please.

Trevor Evelyn has graciously presented us with a few lovely pictures of life at MSB around 1948.

Listed below are the personal identifications insofar as he has been able to remember them.

Now, some of you might well recall the names of the boys in the photographs.

If you do, would you mind sharing that information with us?

If you do happen to have any old photographs to lend us, I'd be happy to borrow them from you, to scan them and to return them in due course.

I shall collate the information you send, and ultimately, send it to Ladislao Kertesz in Venezuela for his records.

Also, if by chance you should know the email addresses, telephone numbers, years of attendance at MSB, or the countries in which any of "your" group of Old Boys now live, perhaps you could send that along to me as well.

The only information I shall publish in the database being developed will be your names, years of attendance at MSB, email addresses and country of residence.

I shall hold all other information as private, to be released only upon the specific request for individual information from one of the Old Boys.

Thanks,

Nigel Boos

Dear Friends,

My thoughts:

I have been thinking for a long time, as to why the UNKNOWNS in the photos do not reply for corrections, and help get the records straight.

Sometimes I write UNKNOWN to see if the person in the photo recognises himself, but even some of my good friends do not object being called UNKNOWNS.

Why??, I presume that it is to much to ask for the memory after 40 years.

Even so I would like help from other assiduous readers, to send your friends the photo that have UNKNOWNS and ask for a suggested name.

Attila:

It seems that you younger Mount boys (1964-1969) were much more adventurous than we older (1953-1958) guys.

Our good friend Salvador Coscarat, from your time and who lives close to me, probably has great stories to tell.

Compared to you all, we can be considered a bunch of "goodie two shoes".

The worst things that we would do is steal some mangoes and have Brother Swa chase us or pelt one another with stale "rock hard" hops bread baked by brother Joseph.

Perhaps the mischief winner in our time was when some of the older guys sneaked out one night and went galavanting in Tunapuna or Port of Spain (I can't remember which place).

For your group this was probably standard "modus operandi".

I know that the "sneaker -outs" were definitely not Isaias, nor Ladislao, nor Urbano nor Ricardo Figueroa, nor David Ames, nor Bodington, nor Norman Gabriel, nor Lipapsky, nor Pradita.

These guys spent too much time studying, playing sports, praying to have time for fun, mischievous activities.

Thanks for enlightening us with such inventiveness that you younger guys enjoyed.

I propose we have a written contest about the worst things we did at Mount with no exaggerations or telling fibs (most difficult to accomplish knowing that many Mount guys are BS experts, including me).

I realise that for some of those older (more than 65 years), senile, big bellied, bald headed guys of my time, remembering so far back might be difficult.

Because I'm still a young, slim 64 year old, with hair, my mind is still in great shape compared to that of my older brother Brian and a few of the other old farts I named above.

Best wishes to all, and let's keep the fun stories coming in order to spice up somewhat our Mount Boy communications network.

While eager to talk about (Pro Fate) I have to say that he was not the first on the list to rock MT, but his standard was much higher.

Che Che ranked Attila as a high ranking official of National Security on his recent visit to Florida and therefore I don't want to send any wrong signals-- have to be careful :-)

However, Ian's mixture was called Flash.

He collected the large aspirin screw-cap bottles and drilled a hole in the top and inserted a straw as the fuse.

Remember that his Dad was Eric Williams Doctor.

His innovation was swapping Kn03 with Kcl03.

Said it was a sparkler as long as sulphur was kept low.

No matching him ( no pun intended ) I think he had his own key to Kitty's well stocked lab.

Many a tree fell.

Today is Fathers day but please remember our Mother Kitty and send something small to Nigel.

Saludos Glen

Finally the mystery is solved!

I remember that explosion very well.

We were all wondering WTF just happened!

It rocked the entire school.

It was in the afternoon sometime.

Big smoke cloud drifted up from the dirt path in the bush behind the refectory.

A few days later, some of us small boys went to see the big hole in the tree trunk, and wondered and theorised about the explosion.

That huge tree with the huge gaping explosion hole in the trunk was there for many more years, and I am sure it accelerated its demise.

Never found out who the culprits were.

There were some rumours running around about some chemicals from the chemistry lab and some senior boys being involved....but never got the straight story.

Until now!

You guys were good!

Was it a black powder mixture you guys used?

Dear Roger,

I am glad to hear from you, the tree did not fell, and as far as I remember it was right next to the track, facing down the hill.

You should remember that I used to go to the mountain very frequently to smoke, even though I was allowed to go to the seniors room.

I remember quite well that episode and as you said the tree is not there any more.

On those days and few years after, I used to stay in Bernard Lange’s home, I know that he and his parents passed over, but he had a sister called Pauline, if any of you contact her, send my best regards and also tell her that I will like to have news from them.

Muy Atentamente,

CARLOS E. DVORAK

Let me tell you about the tree.

It was a massive Silkcotton tree located about halfway along Bottom Track close to where it converged with the Middle Track (in those days).

4 of us planned and carried out the explosion.

"Sausage" Ames was responsible for the concept.

"Jeros" de Barry designed the bomb and the ignition device.

Ames , de Barry and myself stole the ingredients from the Chemistry lab and various other places, and "Rams" Ramlogan provided major assistance in auguring out the cavity in the tree, which was positioned so that, if we accomplished what we set out to do, and the tree fell, it would do so into the valley.

We carried out the deed one Saturday afternoon in 1966 and we sure rocked the Mount that day (and St John's village and areas of St Augustine )...but it didn't fall.

I do think, though, that none of us really expected the power and the noise of the explosion, and I certainly was shellshocked for a while there.

I still can't believe that there wasn't some kind of investigation into the explosion.

But then again, we were fairly expert at covering our tracks in those days.

Basically, nobody knew nothing.

So there you have it, the story of the tree.

A couple years ago 3 of us went looking for it, but it had disappeared.

It must have eventually died and fallen over.

Hello to all the brothers of MSB.

Glenn let me clear up something, everyone knew of our trip to the Mount on Wednesday including the organisers, Winston (who accompanied us) and also our friend Samaroo, it was no secret.

I only wish that more brothers could have come and visit the Old MSB it was a very enjoyable trip and Fr. Cuthbert delighted us with some of his special yogurt drink.

Pity we could not go inside the old MSB school area due to the fact that everyone knows it been put off limits to visit due to the nature of the drug rehab establishment.

Carlos Dvorak did a trip inside the woods looking for the Chest and he was searching also ( he confessed) for the tree they blew up with material retrieved from the Chemical lab, but I guess after forty years they was not much left over.

It has come to my attention of a project of making an old boys office and reunion place at the Mount, and if any old boys decide to visit there is going to be facilities to stay and visit I believe it is a great idea and I suggest if between all of us can pitch in to make it come true.

My regards to all and best wishes,

Oscar

Thanks, Enrique, for this information.

I have just returned from a cottage vacation, myself, in the Muskoka region, and I was captivated by the story, the pictures, the camaraderie and the obvious sense of fun which the arrival of MV Esmeralda generated.

Congratulations to Captain Victor Zanelli on his command of such a beautiful ship, and here's wishing you a safe and very eventful voyage.

Next time, try to include Canada in your itinerary.)

Congrats too, to everyone who was involved in the preparation for the visit to the ship and to the development of bonds of strong friendship between the Old Boys of MSB.

MODERN DAY KNIGHTS / MSB / HIPPIES FROM THE SIXTIES. / ABBEY SCHOOL 1942-1984

OLD BOYS PRIVATE CLUB /MEMBERS ONLY/ THE MONTH OF JUNE, FOREVER ESMERALDA.

Hope all received photos well, I got doubles at times, careful some brothers may not be able to receive too much photos o.k.

Today we thank, and pay tribute, and Honor, to two of our modern day Knights.

A Knight of the Seven Seas:- Our Brother, Captain Pipo Victor Zanelli.

A Knight of the people:-Our Brother, Mr. Jimmy Samaroo.

As the Esmeralda docked in Port-of-Spain , Trinidad and Tobago June 4th, 2008. The captain stepped ashore, with a big smile on his face, and with so much pride he said, I'm proud to be a mount boy, a tear came to in my eye, as I read the the text mail.

With steel pan music in the air a welcoming token from his friend from prep. Mr. Jimmy Samaroo.

The year is 2008, many boys have come forward, from all over the world to say, " I'M PROUD TO BE A MOUNT BOY ".

Congratulations goes out to the Mr. Winston Ramsahai and his committee, for their smooth handling of the event, in the short time they had, to make arrangements etc., and the brothers who volunteered, to make this memorable event possible.

Also thanks to the photography department, for the excellent photos, Brothers:- Oscar Cantore , Ian Gomes and Salvador Coscarat.

Comments:- Oscar, we know you were on the mount, you can't hide, how come you did'nt tell Tim Healy, David Decastro, Trevor Evelyn or myself you were going to be up there.

We hope you not snooping around White Stones, as we did notice over the past few months, you've been asking a lot of questions about the " Chest", which is hidden on White Stones.

Also it was noted that while the Capt. of the Esmeralda , the Trusted Monk and the Dutch Monk who taught French, were have a private conversation on business of the knights, you were also hovering around. Oscar we may have a few question for you.

Thanking all brothers for their time, and co-operation at all times, Your brother till the end,

Glen McKoy
