Dear Andres,

How nice to hear from you.

Thank you for the adjustments you suggested.

I've already made them, so they'll be coming out with the next submission.

Please keep in touch.

Look me up if you ever come to Canada for a visit.

Dear Nigel,

I am taking your word.

Line 296 of your fine database seems to need some adjustment.

I am Andres Freites (known as Freddy Freites back at MSB).

I live in Caracas. (Although I use a Yahoo/UK e mail address...just to keep up with soccer news and the such).

Attended The Abbey School years 1959 through 1961.

Have an old relation with triniland.

My grandmother (on mother's side) was trini herself. She was a Thomas.

This way since my early childhood I used to spend all my school vacations in the island with my mother's relatives.

When my father died in 1958 (I was 10 years of age) my mother left me in the abbey so that I would not lose that part of our family identity.

I recall amongst my relatives and friend families:

Bayne family (lived in Cascade had a house in Gasparee), the Mahon family, Monceaux, my mother's cousin Fifina Blonval married to a Tardieux (lived Victoria Ave. big house opposite the tennis courts).

Fifina was also former Abbot Alleyne's grandmother.

Many other names that now slip from my memories.

Your name seems familiar to me from school.

Thanks for you efforts building our Database. Please correct my line information.

Thanks again and best regards,

Subject: MSB Old Boys Database - May 21, 2008

Hello again, you guys,

Wow!

I've been going through all the circulars which Ladislao has sent us during the past few years, and what a wealth of information they contain!!

As a result of this search, I've found a number of names of "Old Boys" which I'd never known about previously, and as a result the total number of known past students of the Abbey School has swelled to 1032.

Of these, 61 of us have gone to their eternal rewards.

May they all rest in peace.

45 of us have either no email addresses or problematic email addresses.

And therefore, it turns out that we now have 290 valid email addresses for 970 known Old Boys of the Abbey School who are still alive –

i.e. 30%. Not bad. Not bad at all. But I feel we can do better. . . . . . . .

We've got 70% to go. . . . .

Various snippets of news within the Circulars have revealed hidden email addresses, home addresses, telephone numbers, etc., all of which are filed away for future reference, in case anyone is trying to contact someone else and perhaps can't get through by email.

Maybe I can help in such a case - just give me a shout, and I'll see what I can do.

I've amended many of our former records, and in each case, I've coloured the particular amended cells in yellow, to indicate that there has been a change since the last database spreadsheet was sent out.

I suggest that you simply discard all earlier spreadsheets and replace them with this one, which is really the most accurate.

I'd like to make two requests of you, please.

Would you mind checking for yourselves the years which I have assigned to you, for your attendance at the Mount ? In so many cases I've had to make a guess and I'm quite sure that I couldn't be that accurate, so yes - I'd appreciate your help, please.

Secondly, would you please look at the names of the boys who, I'm guessing, attended school at MSB at the same time as yourselves.

Then, would you mind making a good guess yourselves, as to when you think they were at the Mount and drop me a line to let me have your decisions?

I can be reached at: nigelboos@eagles-wings.ca

Thank you, everyone for your help with this project.

As always, if you find any mistakes in these records, please let me know.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks for the pictures, Roger.

You look like you have a lovely family. And your daughter is a beaut!

Would love to take you up on the offer for a ride on Calypso II. However, we'll have to look at timings, etc. as we're scheduled to do some cottaging with friends, and my primary focus this summer has to be the setting up of a cake shop - if the banks will oblige.

I'll talk to Jackie and see what else she's got in the pipeline.

Would you mind if I use this picture of you and Ann on board the boat in our MSB publications?

Or do you have a close-up of yourself to offer?

A few recent pics as promised.

As I said, we're both lucky guys to have great families.

Give us a few days' notice, and perhaps all four of us can meet over a drink or food, or even take Calypso II out for a spin (if you don't get seasick).

I'm striving to become a competent photographer, with very modest success so far.

If interested, some of my images are on photo.net which is probably the oldest & best photography website -essential if you're at all interested in Photography.

Rather than type a long URL which I can never remember, Google my name and it should be close to the top.

Kind regards to you & family,

Roger

Hi Don, CheChe et al

I have been swamped with work and work-related matters over the last several weeks but have never-the-less been enjoying reading the various exchanges of e-mail correspondence.

Indeed I have not heard anything about the proposed re-union.

I guess it’ll have to wait until later in the year..

My dear Ladislao:

Greetings in Jesus name and thanks a million for all the wonderful informational work that all your circulars are doing and providing for all of us.

The “Mount” remains an unforgettable institution in the lives of all of us who were fortunate to be part of its history.

These few notes, handwritten instead of being typed in a computer convey a sense of brevity in order to send this off to you quickly.

So I do not intend to be lengthy here.

But I want to embrace this opportunity to enclose the attached little donation to assist you in you wonderful work.

It is my hope that it would emphasise several things, such as how much I appreciate your Circulars also my tardiness or inability to contribute many articles (I hope later on to do better in this regard) and my thanks for providing me with at least the e-mail of so many “old Boys” whom I intend to write when more time allows me to do so.

I have been in close touch with Dr. David Bratt and his family in Trinidad.

I also had the opportunity to meet with Mervyn Assam as well as Fr. Benedict and Bro. Rupert.

I can also in the process of purchasing a house in Trinidad where, God willing I hope to spend time.

Hoping to split my time between the U.S. and Trinidad.

I am also in close touch with Abbot John Perreira of the Mount, so busy as I am, I have not been completely out of the “Loop”.

That is all for now Ladislao and I ask our dear Lord to bless you and your family abundantly.

My dear Ladislao,

--My God what a surprise!

Well yes you have found the Lionel Roberts.

I am so happy to hear from you, and hopefully by this means I could be in contact with so many ot my former students and precious comrades.

It seems that you have put together a newsletter which I would be most eager to receive.

I have been hungry for news of as many of you as possible and now thanks to you this might be possible.

I shall not be long in this communication, as I regard it as reintroduction to a whole generation of friends and former students which almost tragically was almost passing by.

Suffice it to say that I visited the Mount in early January, and had lunch with the new Abbot and remaining monks.

My wife Merlene was with me and what a thrill it was to us.

Thoughts and fond memories come cascading back to me of those days of yore.

On that occasion I met with Brother Rupert who gave me Isaias Farcheg"s address.

I promptly wrote him, but to date have not been graced with a reply.

I hope that I would more successful with!

In my next communication with you I hope to provide you with more information about me and my family.

God has been good to me and my family.

You will be happy to know That I remain within the bosom of the church,

Two years ago I celebrated my Silver Anniversary Of my Ordination as a Catholic Deacon.

But more of anon.

Ladislao how beautiful it is to hear from you..please reply promptly.

God bless you and your family my friend.

NB:I will be sending you a picture of myself and my wife soon.

BROTHER VINCENT--LIONEL ROBERTS IS VERY MUCH ALIVE

HI LADISLAO,

PLEASE ADVISE EVERYONE THAT BROTHER VINCENT--LIONEL ROBERTS IS VERY MUCH ALIVE.LIVING IN FLORIDA.

"THE BANDIT"

(I have looked him up and here is the news, I am sorry that he does not answer the emails and has forgotten his ALUMNI. Ed.)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------.

A COPY OF A NEWSPAPER AND REPORT.

ST. PETERSBURG | On election days, Deacon Lionel Roberts’ car shows his dedication to God and community.

Resting on the dashboard in the front window, an “Elections Official” sign marks him as a man with political responsibility.

Inches away, a blue rosary hangs from the rear view mirror.

Originally from Trinidad, Deacon Roberts has worked election days for years — first as a resident of New York, now in Florida.

In several precincts in south St. Petersburg, he oversees polling sites, checking on them throughout the day to make sure all is running smoothly.

If it isn’t, he works to solve the problem.

Deacon Lionel Roberts, who was born in Trinidad and raised in Guyana, retains a trace of a British accent even though he has lived in the United States since 1969.

Roberts, 61, says he has always been a ``very religious`` Catholic.

After serving in the British Army during World War II, he entered a Benedictine monastery in Trinidad and spent 14 years as a monk.

But the cloistered, contemplative life of a Benedictine gradually lost its appeal, he says.

The Vatican granted him a dispensation to release him from his vows.

He subsequently married and moved to Brazil, where he worked for several years for the Alliance for Progress, the U.S. development program initiated by President Kennedy.

In his job as administrative assistant to the director, he helped to implement the construction of roads and water systems in underdeveloped areas.

After their two sons were born, Lionel and Merlene Roberts moved back to Trinidad, where he got a job as a salesman for a U.S. pharmaceutical company - a position that led two years later to their emigration to New York City.

Life in the United States has been good for the family, Roberts says.

His wife worked for many years as a personnel specialist at the United Nations.

His son Larry, 24, is a Princeton University graduate and a chemical engineer for the Xerox Corp. in Rochester, N.Y.

Son Chris, 22, a recent graduate of Cornell University, is an electrical engineer for Honeywell and lives with his parents in St. Petersburg.

Through all his years in New York, Roberts said, he never lost his close ties to the Roman Catholic Church.

When his parish in Brooklyn announced plans for a training program for deacons, Roberts was among the first to apply.

A Catholic deacon, he explains, is an ordained clergyman, just below the rank of priest, who can be married while serving the church.

Most deacons complete their training on a part-time basis while employed in secular jobs, and most serve the church as volunteers or part-time clergy after ordination.

Their tasks can range from assisting in the Mass to parish outreach and administration.

Even when they are employed full-time by the church, the compensation for deacons is generally much lower than for comparable jobs in the secular world.

For Roberts, becoming a deacon ``was a good opportunity for me to be involved in the church in an intimate way while still carrying on my duties as a husband and father.``

After 4 1/2 years of part-time study, he was ordained in 1977 with the first class of deacons at St. Jerome's Parish in Brooklyn.

He served the parish in a number of positions, including pre-Cana (marriage preparation) counsellor and volunteer director of the church's outreach program, until his retirement from the pharmaceutical firm and his move to Florida in 1984.

Since coming to St. Petersburg, Roberts has served as manager of the diocesan real estate office and later as director of administration.

For nearly a year, he has been involved in establishing the new Office for Black Catholics.

Roberts views his present post as one more opportunity to remain close to his church. ``A deacon is a servant,`` he said, ``to be found where he is needed.``

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------.

That is for now, till the next one,

I have read the emails until August 2008, so I still have lots to do.

Your article shall be read, patience.

Newsletter for past alumni of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I.

Caracas, 25 October 2008 No. 364

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Friends,

Here is the resume of the visit of Capt. Victor Zanelli, and the Chilean School sailing ship ESMERALDA.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chris Knowles

Friday, July 4, 2008 12:31:05 AM

Dear Ladislao,

Please add the following item to the next Circular and to any posting which is currently in use for the Old Boys.

Thanks,

Chris Knowles

1. ABBEY SCHOOL OLD BOY VISITS TRINIDAD IN ‘HIS SHIP’.

2. REUNION PLANNED.

1. THE VISIT.

On the evening of Tuesday June 3rd, CAPITÁN DE NAVÍO VICTOR ZANELLI SUFFO hosted a reception on board the Chilean Navy training ship Esmeralda, a spectacular barquentine (a four-masted, tall, sailing ship, with the fore sail rigged square) that was on a short official visit to Trinidad.

Victor Zanelli is a former Abbey School student, who attended the College in 1970/71, during which time he was a member of the Aqua Lads swimming team.

He had asked that some of the guests should be former classmates, other Mount Saint Benedict Old Boys and their wives, and members of the Benedictine monastic community.

Two fellow team mates (past Aqua Lads members) were included among the Old Boys’ party.

The majority of the guests were representatives of government, the Embassy of Chile, other diplomatic missions, the Trinidad & Tobago military and other invitees.

The formal part of the reception was from 7 to 9 pm, during which time The Abbey School Old Boys had arranged for some local musical entertainment and presented Capt. Victor with a formal commendation in the form of a stylised scroll and other mementos from themselves and the monastic community, honouring him on his elevation to rank and command.

The more casual part of the reception went on for a couple of hours afterward, when Victor invited the Old Boys to the excellently appointed Captains’ Salon.

On the following Friday morning, just before the ship sailed, there was a tour of the ship during which Victor presented mementos of the vessel to those who were present (and a lot of photos were taken!).

This was Victors first visit to Trinidad and Tobago in over 35 years.

Later during the ship’s stay, the Trinidad Old Boys arranged an evening of local hospitality for the visiting Old Boys from overseas, and visits to the Mount to see the community including the Abbot and Frs. Augustine and Benedict, to Maracas Beach, to Balandra to see turtle activities, to several restaurants, and of course a shopping trip.

The past students of The Abbey School include a group of illustrious achievers in the professions, public service, business and the legal bench.

Discussions are ongoing (among the group) to formally incorporate an Association the purposes of which would include: social and recreational activities, to foster the spirit of brotherhood and collaboration; attention to the needs of the Abbey and of necessitous old boys, and helpful projects related to common societal interests.

2. THE REUNION

A reunion of The Old Boys is being planned for 30th August 2008 at the Mount.

More details are not yet available, but will be posted as soon as they are.

In the meantime anyone interested and able to attend can send their name and email address to Chris Knowles at knowlescb@hotmail.com and also to Winston Ramsahai at infosanpedro@yahoo.com

Re. the story of the Chest. one thing I noticed was the markings at the bottom of the candle holder.

I think I am right in saying that prior to 1912 when the St Benedictine monks arrived in Trinidad, they were in BRAZIL and were asked to leave so they approached the Archbishop of Trinidad & Tobago to allow them to set up in T'Dad and the land they were offered was situated at the top of Mount Tabor and all it had was an old Hut which was still standing in 1945.

You had to go along the path of the old Resevoir turn to the right and climb have done that.

I have read some of the coments of old students and it has saddened me.

I CONSIDER 1945 TO 1949 TO BE ONE OF THE PERIODS OF MY LIFE THAT I WILL NEVER FORGET and so it was not difficult for me to remember.

Today all the renovations on my house that I have done was the direct result of the things I learnd on Saturday mornings from Fr. Ildefonse.

Well my friend I could go on and on but do not want to bore you, with the ramblings of an old man.

Trevor,

Thanks to our friend Glen Mckoy (most gifted Mount-High-Schooler) for keeping things -ALIVE-.

I want to ask if you have the same problem with the Evelyn surname being also a girls first name?

Sometimes I am less than thrilled when I get a Pay-check or Airline ticket reversed and have to explain.

(The only thing worse is having to add your mothers maiden name like in Venezuela.).

As far as I know it is English and we were not exiled because of atrocities commited but simply because we were without education-- the biggest crime of all. (hate to expose us in public).

I was thinking of getting it tattooed on my arm but people might ask if it's my girlfriends name.

Unlike you it was not my best years but Mount sent me off (no pun intended) with God´s word and ready to defend any Roman Catholic institution.

Cheers

Evelyn Glen

My dear Trevor,

I have been writing some stories to keep the guys interested, and have drawn quite an audience.

I have over 50 brothers, or more, I send emails to now, on my list.

I also have Wayne Brown on the list, Nigel said he is a good writer, but he has not said anything yet, but he does read all I send him.

I was speaking to Arthur Knaggs on the phone Sunday, he is doing well, since his hernia operation, last December.

He said he can travel again.

So he will be in Trinidad for a few days.

He don't have the internet, at his house, but do catch up when he goes to his daughter's house.

Tim Healy and myself lived on White Stones, we know every spot up there.

I will show you on a map sometime where our den was.

Trevor all your stories are welcomed, I also need some help , in keeping this fire burning.

Sometimes I get writer's block ha ha.

Ask Nigel, and I start to make up things up Ha! Ha!

So many more tales to tell.

In one of your emails, you did state, how some comments, made by few, did upset you, well of course it must, but we have traveled far from that now, and just look at the amount of boys that have stepped forward, since those unpleasant comments, to be counted, for their good memories on the Mount.

Thank you for your replies ,

Best regards Glen.

Thank you for the kind words and I would be honoured to be part of the MSB old boys Knights.

I still have a few more things to send to Nigel with whom I have been in contact during the last months of 2007

I know somewhere in this house there are more pictures etc but its to find them some day.

I hope in the not too distant future.

Nigel has asked to draw a map of White Stones & mount Tabor as I remember them and I am in the process of doing so but have been buisy cleaning up the yard since the snow has gone.

I would welcome any Emails from you at any time.

Thank you for circular No 334 I have noted that Cecil Ince has stated that Fr. Bernard and Fr. Gantaume were at one time ABBOT of Mt. St. Benedict.

Well my friends this is not possible for the position of ABBOT is a consecrated position and you are an ABBOT for life just like a BISHOP or ARCHBISHOP.

Before Fr. Adelbert the monastery was a Priory and Fr Prior was Hugh Van der Sanden.

The Priory was raised to ABBEY status in 1947 and the monks voted for Fr.Adelbert then.

He was blessed for this position by The Archbishop of Port-of -Spain FINBAR RYAN.

I remember this very well for he was my favouret Priest.

We had one hell of a celebration Well so long for now

EXERCISE FOR PEOPLE OVER 50

Begin by standing on a comfortable surface where you have plenty of room at Each side.

With a 5-lb potato sack in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides, and hold them there as long as you can.

Try to reach a full minute, and then relax.

Each day you'll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer.

After a couple weeks, move up to 10-lb potato sacks.

Then try 50-lb potato sacks.

Then eventually try to get to where you can Lift a 100-lb potato sack in each hand, and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. (I'm at this level.)

Once you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each sack.

Hi Attila,

Thanks.

Do you have any idea why we are no longer hearing from Ladislao?

The last Circular was one in September, none in October, and Ladislao is not answering my emails!

That is very unusual. I am becoming concerned that he is not well.

Copying this to him so that he can reassure us that he is OK.

Hi Ladislao,

Stuart is right.

There are several other errors in the naming of the photo.

I am in Cayman at the moment with no access to my collection of photos.

Stuart, could you look again at the names?

It should be obvious what the errors are.

If you email them to Ladislao I am sure he will be able to correct the original photo.

I will also add the correction to "comments" on the photo on the Blog.

Easy as it is, not sufficient numbers of us appear to know how to register a comment on the Blog, I regret to say.

Hi Tony,

All is well.

I have been getting the circulars from Ladislao and posting them on the website http://abbeyschool2007.blogspot.com/.

He has not been as regular as previously, due to the pressure of work, but is catching up.

If you have not been receiving the Circulars, you may have accidentally dropped off his mailing list.

So, I am copying this to him for him to check he has your address in his system.

My latest passion is at the link below!

I have subscribed to your posts, and enjoy reading them.

Keep well.

Hi Tony,

Don't forget, if you ever stop getting the Circulars, if they exist they are up on the website, usually on the same day they are sent out by Ladislao.

The latest one, No 324, sent out today, is already up on the website: http://abbeyschool2008circulars.blogspot.com/

You can access all the missing ones from the right-hand panel by clicking on the year you want, and then on the individual Circular Number in the right hand panel.

Any photos that you want to see a better view of, just right-click on it, and when the drop-down menu appears, select, "Open link in new tab".

That way, you can continue reading the Circular while the picture opens in a new tab, and you can view the picture at your convenience.

Keep well.

Hi Ladislao,

Received and posted to the Blog.

Not to worry about photos.

No one sends me any photos for posting to the Blog.

There are only one or two comments over the past several years.

I have been hoping people will go on the Blog and learn how to post comments on your Circulars, in particular the photographs.

But, no luck.

Keep well.

Ladislao,

Thank you for sending the invitation for the reunion but as much as it would be wonderful to attend as one of the nearly first students at MSB, to see all the new stuff that was not there in 1949 when I left.

If any one has good pictures of the Mount I would love to see them.

Thanks for all you have sent me I still say that the 5 years spent at the Mount were some of the best years of my life.

The Saturday morning classes by Fr. Ildefonse on wood working still carries me through today.

I have helped my son in law nearly rebuild his cottage up north.

Well my friend again thanks
