Circular No 364

Caracas, 25 October 2008 No. 364

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Friends,

Here is the resume of the visit of Capt. Victor Zanelli, and the Chilean School sailing ship ESMERALDA.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Ladislao,

Please add the following item to the next Circular and to any posting which is currently in use for the Old Boys.

Thanks,

Chris Knowles

1. ABBEY SCHOOL OLD BOY VISITS TRINIDAD IN ‘HIS SHIP’.

2. REUNION PLANNED.

1. THE VISIT.

On the evening of Tuesday June 3rd, CAPITÁN DE NAVÍO VICTOR ZANELLI SUFFO hosted a reception on board the Chilean Navy training ship Esmeralda, a spectacular barquentine (a four-masted, tall, sailing ship, with the fore sail rigged square) that was on a short official visit to Trinidad.

Victor Zanelli is a former Abbey School student, who attended the College in 1970/71, during which time he was a member of the Aqua Lads swimming team.

He had asked that some of the guests should be former classmates, other Mount Saint Benedict Old Boys and their wives, and members of the Benedictine monastic community.

Two fellow team mates (past Aqua Lads members) were included among the Old Boys’ party.

The majority of the guests were representatives of government, the Embassy of Chile, other diplomatic missions, the Trinidad & Tobago military and other invitees.

The formal part of the reception was from 7 to 9 pm, during which time The Abbey School Old Boys had arranged for some local musical entertainment and presented Capt. Victor with a formal commendation in the form of a stylised scroll and other mementos from themselves and the monastic community, honouring him on his elevation to rank and command.

The more casual part of the reception went on for a couple of hours afterward, when Victor invited the Old Boys to the excellently appointed Captains’ Salon.

On the following Friday morning, just before the ship sailed, there was a tour of the ship during which Victor presented mementos of the vessel to those who were present (and a lot of photos were taken!).

This was Victors first visit to Trinidad and Tobago in over 35 years.

Later during the ship’s stay, the Trinidad Old Boys arranged an evening of local hospitality for the visiting Old Boys from overseas, and visits to the Mount to see the community including the Abbot and Frs. Augustine and Benedict, to Maracas Beach, to Balandra to see turtle activities, to several restaurants, and of course a shopping trip.

The past students of The Abbey School include a group of illustrious achievers in the professions, public service, business and the legal bench.

Discussions are ongoing (among the group) to formally incorporate an Association the purposes of which would include: social and recreational activities, to foster the spirit of brotherhood and collaboration; attention to the needs of the Abbey and of necessitous old boys, and helpful projects related to common societal interests.

2. THE REUNION

A reunion of The Old Boys is being planned for 30th August 2008 at the Mount.

More details are not yet available, but will be posted as soon as they are.

In the meantime anyone interested and able to attend can send their name and email address to Chris Knowles at knowlescb@hotmail.com and also to Winston Ramsahai at infosanpedro@yahoo.com

Re. the story of the Chest. one thing I noticed was the markings at the bottom of the candle holder.

I think I am right in saying that prior to 1912 when the St Benedictine monks arrived in Trinidad, they were in BRAZIL and were asked to leave so they approached the Archbishop of Trinidad & Tobago to allow them to set up in T'Dad and the land they were offered was situated at the top of Mount Tabor and all it had was an old Hut which was still standing in 1945.

You had to go along the path of the old Resevoir turn to the right and climb have done that.

I have read some of the coments of old students and it has saddened me.

I CONSIDER 1945 TO 1949 TO BE ONE OF THE PERIODS OF MY LIFE THAT I WILL NEVER FORGET and so it was not difficult for me to remember.

Today all the renovations on my house that I have done was the direct result of the things I learnd on Saturday mornings from Fr. Ildefonse.

Well my friend I could go on and on but do not want to bore you, with the ramblings of an old man.

Regards

Trevor

Trevor,

Thanks to our friend Glen Mckoy (most gifted Mount-High-Schooler) for keeping things -ALIVE-.

I want to ask if you have the same problem with the Evelyn surname being also a girls first name?

Sometimes I am less than thrilled when I get a Pay-check or Airline ticket reversed and have to explain.

(The only thing worse is having to add your mothers maiden name like in Venezuela.).

As far as I know it is English and we were not exiled because of atrocities commited but simply because we were without education-- the biggest crime of all. (hate to expose us in public).

I was thinking of getting it tattooed on my arm but people might ask if it's my girlfriends name.

Unlike you it was not my best years but Mount sent me off (no pun intended) with God´s word and ready to defend any Roman Catholic institution.

Cheers

Evelyn Glen

My dear Trevor,

I have been writing some stories to keep the guys interested, and have drawn quite an audience.

I have over 50 brothers, or more, I send emails to now, on my list.

I also have Wayne Brown on the list, Nigel said he is a good writer, but he has not said anything yet, but he does read all I send him.

I was speaking to Arthur Knaggs on the phone Sunday, he is doing well, since his hernia operation, last December.

He said he can travel again.

So he will be in Trinidad for a few days.

He don't have the internet, at his house, but do catch up when he goes to his daughter's house.

Tim Healy and myself lived on White Stones, we know every spot up there.

I will show you on a map sometime where our den was.

Trevor all your stories are welcomed, I also need some help , in keeping this fire burning.

Sometimes I get writer's block ha ha.

Ask Nigel, and I start to make up things up Ha! Ha!

So many more tales to tell.

In one of your emails, you did state, how some comments, made by few, did upset you, well of course it must, but we have traveled far from that now, and just look at the amount of boys that have stepped forward, since those unpleasant comments, to be counted, for their good memories on the Mount.

Thank you for your replies ,

Best regards Glen.

Thank you for the kind words and I would be honoured to be part of the MSB old boys Knights.

I still have a few more things to send to Nigel with whom I have been in contact during the last months of 2007

I know somewhere in this house there are more pictures etc but its to find them some day.

I hope in the not too distant future.

Nigel has asked to draw a map of White Stones & mount Tabor as I remember them and I am in the process of doing so but have been buisy cleaning up the yard since the snow has gone.

I would welcome any Emails from you at any time.

Ladislao

Thank you for circular No 334 I have noted that Cecil Ince has stated that Fr. Bernard and Fr. Gantaume were at one time ABBOT of Mt. St. Benedict.

Well my friends this is not possible for the position of ABBOT is a consecrated position and you are an ABBOT for life just like a BISHOP or ARCHBISHOP.

Before Fr. Adelbert the monastery was a Priory and Fr Prior was Hugh Van der Sanden.

The Priory was raised to ABBEY status in 1947 and the monks voted for Fr.Adelbert then.

He was blessed for this position by The Archbishop of Port-of -Spain FINBAR RYAN.

I remember this very well for he was my favouret Priest.

We had one hell of a celebration Well so long for now

EXERCISE FOR PEOPLE OVER 50

Begin by standing on a comfortable surface where you have plenty of room at Each side.

With a 5-lb potato sack in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides, and hold them there as long as you can.

Try to reach a full minute, and then relax.

Each day you'll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer.

After a couple weeks, move up to 10-lb potato sacks.

Then try 50-lb potato sacks.

Then eventually try to get to where you can Lift a 100-lb potato sack in each hand, and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. (I'm at this level.)

Once you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each sack.

Thanks.

Do you have any idea why we are no longer hearing from Ladislao?

The last Circular was one in September, none in October, and Ladislao is not answering my emails!

That is very unusual. I am becoming concerned that he is not well.

Copying this to him so that he can reassure us that he is OK.

Hi Ladislao,

Stuart is right.

There are several other errors in the naming of the photo.

I am in Cayman at the moment with no access to my collection of photos.

Stuart, could you look again at the names?

It should be obvious what the errors are.

If you email them to Ladislao I am sure he will be able to correct the original photo.

I will also add the correction to "comments" on the photo on the Blog.

Easy as it is, not sufficient numbers of us appear to know how to register a comment on the Blog, I regret to say.

Hi Tony,

All is well.

I have been getting the circulars from Ladislao and posting them on the website http://abbeyschool2007.blogspot.com/.

He has not been as regular as previously, due to the pressure of work, but is catching up.

If you have not been receiving the Circulars, you may have accidentally dropped off his mailing list.

So, I am copying this to him for him to check he has your address in his system.

I have subscribed to your posts, and enjoy reading them.

Hi Tony,

Don't forget, if you ever stop getting the Circulars, if they exist they are up on the website, usually on the same day they are sent out by Ladislao.

The latest one, No 324, sent out today, is already up on the website: http://abbeyschool2008circulars.blogspot.com/

You can access all the missing ones from the right-hand panel by clicking on the year you want, and then on the individual Circular Number in the right hand panel.

Any photos that you want to see a better view of, just right-click on it, and when the drop-down menu appears, select, "Open link in new tab".

That way, you can continue reading the Circular while the picture opens in a new tab, and you can view the picture at your convenience.

Keep well.

Hi Ladislao,

Received and posted to the Blog.

Not to worry about photos.

No one sends me any photos for posting to the Blog.

There are only one or two comments over the past several years.

I have been hoping people will go on the Blog and learn how to post comments on your Circulars, in particular the photographs.

But, no luck.

Keep well.

Thank you for sending the invitation for the reunion but as much as it would be wonderful to attend as one of the nearly first students at MSB, to see all the new stuff that was not there in 1949 when I left.

If any one has good pictures of the Mount I would love to see them.

Thanks for all you have sent me I still say that the 5 years spent at the Mount were some of the best years of my life.

The Saturday morning classes by Fr. Ildefonse on wood working still carries me through today.

I have helped my son in law nearly rebuild his cottage up north.

I was also wondering was Big Joe doing in that picture of 1969 since he left Mount before I did and I left in 1967 ??? ...

And yes ! .. it was the first time I see Cutty in scout's uniform ... incredible !!! ...

As I said ... the pictures are real jewels

Dear Attila,

I am very amazed with your scout- and tug-of-war-pictures.

These are the jewels of all the old pictures to me.

In my scout group we did not make such complicated structures, only the tripod or quadropod with one or two floors.

I wonder if you people gave the strength any thought at that time if all the scouts would go into the tree houses together?

In fact only two bamboo beams are holding the whole floor, ha ha.

My job is to ask building permits for houses at the county.

I don't think I would get one with this structure for so many people.

So many memories the picture brings back, tying all those nuts with rope, bowline, clove hitch, whatever.

And Father Cuthbert in scouting uniform, never seen before!

In the tug-of-war picture I only recognise you.

In the scout picture the guy with the shades is Big Joe Azar to me.

But I don't understand, what he is doing with the MSB-scouting in 1969 as he graduated long before that maybe 1966 or so.

Also the boy with black hair, first above Fr. Cuthbert, to me that is Larry Thomas, older brother of Richard Thomas.

He must have graduated in summer 1967, so what is he doing with MSB-scouting in 1969?

Or I am mistaken, or he stayed at the Mount to do his A-level or something.

If you count from bottom to top, #8 is umistaken Peter Quesnel, #10 is Richard Knox.

He was in my class in June 1965, and probably failed one exam after I left.

The faces get vague higher up, I wouldn't have recognised you I think.

But you are hanging out most in the air . . .

Thanks for the pictures, I enjoy them!

Caura River Scout camp - Tree House, sometime in 1969.

Many familiar faces there. I am sitting on top of the tree in front of the top tree house with the cowboy hat and the lamp hanging.

There are Fr. Cuthbert, Big Joe Azar, Oscar Cantore, Peter Quesnel, McCartney (the first in the bottom), above him is the the elder of the Roquefort brothers, Richard Knox half way up, John Pugh is sitting on the branch on the right side of the top tree house with the bush hat.

If anybody can fill in more names, please do so.

Jan:

You are welcome.

Glad you enjoyed them.

If I run across any more old MSB photos I will continue to send them.

To be sure, I am not 100% positive of the year of the picture.

It could have been taken sometime in 1968.

But I am sure it was taken in one of those two years.

Not before and not after.

I guess it was a good thing we didn' t have to worry about getting any building permits for those two structures !!! Hahaha

As one engineer to another, and between us, I admit I was in charge of building the tree houses.

We had a lot of fun building it.

And they were good tree houses as far as tree houses go.

It was something different to do from the usual Quadrapod structures that we always built.

I had really wanted to build this instead, so I asked Cutty and he gave his OK.

Actually, if I remember correctly, both tree houses were quite strong.

The proof was that nobody got hurt.

And some of us spent the night camping up there.

If you look at the top tree house, the floor was supported by two strong bamboo beams joining in an apex (stronger).

The third, (base) support beam in the rear was incredibly strong stuff too.

The floor area was done with whole (not split) bamboos.

Also, the wall had two more strong horizontal support beams, so the floor beams didn't have that much to support, except the floor platform and the human load upon it.

The bottom tree house was supported by the two parallel tree branches, so that wasn't going anywhere.

Believe me, we tested it well before getting inside.

It was stronger than a brick shithouse and much more flexible.

Also it was quite small inside, as it could fit only maybe 4 boys maximum, so overload was not really a problem.

Remember that the good thing about the green bamboo that we used is that it doesn't fail suddenly.

It is very flexible but incredibly strong & lightweight at the same time.

And flexibility is a good thing.

When it starts to overload, it starts to bend a lot first, so there is plenty of warning before any catastrophic failure occurs.

For these reasons, to me, this bamboo is the perfect natural structural construction material.

They use it for building some incredible scaffolding in India and SE Asia high-rise buildings.

Like this: http://pixdaus.com/single.php?id=25402

OK... enough of the engineering stuff...

Jan: perhaps, with your computer skills you could put numbers above the boys and start adding some names like we did in the other pictures.

To answer some of your questions:

Big Joe Azar was one of the Scoutmasters and he was helping helping Cutty.

Carlos Dvorak was another one of those Scoutmaster helping out Cutty.

He would come up for the Saturday morning Scout meetings and would attend camps with us.

Yes I think the guy above Cutty's head is Larry Thomas.

I don't remember what he was still doing there.

Probably the same thing as Big Joe Azar.

Larry was not there for A-Levels.

There were no more A-Level classes at the Mount after 1967.

Form 5 "O" levels was the highest class you could take.

Richard Knox must have failed more than one class because he was taking Form 5 "O" Levels with me in 1969.

Cheers,

Attila Gyuris

I'd like to comment on this fabulous picture and say this, that the 2nd MSB Scout Troop, well-known for its wonderful, entrepreneurial talents and adventurous spirit, has once again shown what it can do / did do, and you guys have upheld and maintained the high quality of great bamboo engineering which we had become accustomed to regard as typical of our boys.

Well done, everyone, and thanks for the great photograph. I'm glad it was recorded for posterity.

Wonder who took the picture . . . . . . .

Dear Attila,

Yes you are right, if there were only three or four scouts in each tree house I trust the bamboo structure would hold.

Indeed bamboo is very strong in relation to its weight, and indeed green bamboo is very flexible and gives you warnings when the structure wants to fail.

In fact you separated the weight of the walls and roof from the floor.

So the floor beams should only hold the floor and the boys upon it.

I was only thinking if the whole bunch of boys in the picture would go in the treehouse, one or two floor beams might start to crack.

But I see you really did give the strength a thought at that time.

The picture of the bamboo skyscraper in China is incredible, but it works over there.

Amazing that it was all your idea to do something different for once instead of those quadropods that were usually built, Father Cuthbert is the man who you could successfully ask such a thing.

But then it is understandable that Big Joe and Larry Thomas and so were just helping out Father Cuthbert in scouting in their free time.

I will send you the pictures with numbers.

About Richard Knox, he was with me in the Form II picture made about June 1965.

We would have graduated in July 1968.

I think he failed one year and did his graduation in July 1969.

If you have any more pictures, please share them with all of us!

Much greetings from the other side of the world!

I think it was Fr. " Vush " who took it.

He was the usual Mount photographer.

I had this picture with the tree houses, and a few others, tucked away in an old envelope.

I will scan the others and send them on.

You are right about the 2nd MSB Scout Troop being probably the best of its kind at the time in Trinidad.

We won several Scouting competitions, I think among them was the 1968 Chancellor's Flag competition in Chaguaramas.

There we competed against many other scout troops,

Each sent a selection of their best scouts and formed a patrol to represent them during the competition..

I remember what inspired me to join the Scout troop at MSB is when, as a small boy in Prep " A" (around 1964-1965), during a " Parents' day" demonstration on a Sunday,

The Scout Marching band came marching down from the Refectory and put on a heck of fine choreographed marching demonstration with plenty of loud martial music.

Then they changed clothes and joined the rest of the scout troop to built and completely set up TWO functioning 2-story green bamboo elevated Quadrapod camps with tents, sleeping quarters cooked dinner over an elevated campfire and had everything right there on the basketball court in front of the benches.

They even had a bamboo bridge and a rope pulley between the two Quadrapod structures.

They did this all in about 3 hours.

Then, after all parents and everybody else took a tour of the camp, they tore it all down in about an hour.

It was amazing for me to see the ingenuity and resourcefulness those boys displayed.

Most of all, they all seemed to have such a great time doing all these things.

Right then and there I decided I wanted in on that.

I also joined the marching band and played the drums. I was a band member all the way until graduating from Form 5.

We had band practise with Fr.Cuthbert in charge up in the Refectory every Saturday morning, while everybody else was in the study hall.

It was a lot of fun and I never regretted it.
