Dear Friends,

Some of the Xmas letters and photos, also some sad news on Gordon Lang who passed away in Bogota, Colombia.

Also news from our travelling cameraman, Rafael.

Ladislao ....

The white haired Mount Boy between Dennis Gurley and me is HARRY LAUGHLIN

He also appears in the photo with Peter Tang, Dennis and Don ...

I took that photograph myself ....

It was great to see Harry Laughlin after all these years .... the same good old friend ....the conversation with Harry was superb !!! .... we shared some good memories of Mount, The basketball team,.. our coach Tuko ...the scouting experience, the band, ... it was great !

Actually, that was my camera that took all those photos ...

Peter Tang took the photo of Harry, Dennis and myself (the last in the attachments) ...

I took all the other photos in which I do not appear ... including the one with Jon Golding, Stuart Henderson (Cush) and the Mitchell Brothers (Big & Small BoxHeads)

It was sooo great to see them all again .. and they were all as great as ever ...

I will treasure the moments at Dennis home - with my Mount Boy school mates - for the rest of my life.

Dennis and Marie Gurley - on their part - were the most gentle and generous hosts anyone could ever expect.

GOD Bless them ! I will keep those memories in my heart forever !!!!

RE: Property Down the Islands ???...

Glen Mckoy ...

Hello Nigel,

Season greetings.

I always thought the Mount had a place down the islands, unless they were renting.

Anyhow, when we the Trinis went home for the long weekend the other boys not from Trinidad went down the islands. I will forward this email to Coscarat, he would know, or just ask Cutty.

Take care, best regards for the New Year

Dear Glen,

I read your Dec 8/07 note with interest, particularly because I was unaware that the Abbey School had anything to do with something or the other which you mentioned (see red highlight below) "Down the Islands."

Would you please let me know what you're talking about, because I left the Mount in 1960, and perhaps an acquisition was made after I'd left the place.

If in fact the Abbey School, or the Mount itself did own a property down the islands, you're quite right - what happened to it?

Your question is a good one.

Happy New Year to you and yours.

Hi there guys,

How yuh doing and thanks for the angel that's all I need, about the Abbey, the play grounds and the swimming pool.

I think its a good idea to re-established things as it was before, but I think the people who were in charge of it before, should not be in charge again of the operation as they never kept it going once the money ended (this would be the church).

They never invested in the assets they had like the pool etc.

This place could have been an excellent private sports club for families etc. with tennis courts etc., but was left to waste away.

Our field could have hosted some of the football games in the country or in that area, it was well build, I don't know how bad it is now.

I think the only way this venture can work is as a business.

Once up and running, it must be profitable, in order to pay a lease to the church for its sport facility etc.

This kind of business takes the management and staff that are committed to sports in a professional way for they are the front line of what will make or break this type of business.

Sorry if I may sound a little negative with some of my comments, however we must not let emotions cloud our judgement.

I am also sorry to see the this place that made so many good sporting teams, and the confidence that sports give to the youths, were left in ruin for so long.

I am committed to invest in this project after a feasibility study has been done, and if this is the way the old boys want to go.

How come no body mention doing something down the Islands, what ever happened to that place??.

I think that could be a really good place to develop, and could draw top dollar from tourist and locals looking for a private place, what do you think??? Looking forward to comments.

I see Richard Clarke, Phillip de Pass in the area quite often.

Humphrey Hokoon I haven’t seen in many years he used to fly for the National Airline will try to locate him.

Haven’t see Gerard Anderson since a couple of years after I left school I’ll make some enquiry and get back to you

As for the rest of guys, I don’t recognise the names.

Thanks Joanne,

I suspected that in the tone of your letter, and we will continue to pray for the repose of his soul.

We too have some sad news as Val's Mum passed away very suddenly, at 1.00 a.m. (with a heart attack) yesterday, within an hour, so it was peaceful and sudden.

She was one month short of 88.

We left at 1.00 p.m. Val & I, our two eldest (A & B) plus her brothers daughter.

Son E arrives on Sat, and daughter C arrives on Sun.

Funeral is on Mon in Scarborough at 11.00 a.m.

We are at her residence in Scarborough and can be reached at 416-267-3234, and will be here approx 2 weeks as needed.

We mourn together,

Dear Arthur:

Somehow you must've not received the e-mail I sent informing everyone about Dad's passing.

Dad died on Jan 08.

In he end he had many complications that took a toll on his week body.

He was in hospital for a day and there was nothing the doctors could have done.

Thank you for giving him one last opportunity to relive happier moments of his life.

He always vividly remembered his W.I. friends and your call surely lifted his spirit.

Thank you for being there for him.

Stanley Achong / Class 1964 - 1969: My visit to MSB

Hi All:

Greetings from the Cold North!

Just returned from an extremely hectic vacation.

Visited Mount on Friday 9th November upon my arrival off Sun Princess ship.

As expected, my visit went very well and at times quite emotional.

Fr. Cuthbert really has not changed and had lots of stories to tell.

We were happy that he was able to see us since he was not well the week prior.

Everything at MSB looked exactly as it did when I left and it brought back many memories of my younger days at school.

I remembered taking those cold showers in the morning just off the basket ball court (smile).

The school is of course now a Drug rehab centre and the Cafeteria and Hall still in very good shape.

We also visited the facility where Pax Yogurt was manufactured but were not able to see it in operation since it was Dewali holiday.

The business seem to be doing very well for them and it is unfortunate that they were not able to keep the honey business running.

My visit to Trinidad was very brief and we are already planning another visit sometime next year.

Hope we can meet on my next visit.

Take care guys.....

Stan

Upcoming Visit to Trinidad by Stanley Achong from Canada...

Dear Fr Cuthbert:

Greetings from Toronto , Canada .

My name is Stanley (Achong) and I attended Mt St Benedict School during the period of 1964-69.

Quite recently, I was able to connect with Andres Larsen, Attila Gyuris and Michael D’Ornellas via the Internet and learnt that the “Old Boys Association” was alive and well with so many members from my precious past.

I am very happy to hear that you are still at the Abbey and have heard good things about the great yogurt you are making (smile).

I have been in Canada since 1975 and this is my first trip to Trinidad in over 25yrs.

My sister Diane and family still reside in Trinidad and Mom and Dad still spend the winter months with them.

Since my departure from Trinidad , I have been through many journeys in my life and the one most memorable to me will always be my days at Mount St. Benedict.

Pictures I received from the members have been very helpful to me in reconnecting the names with the faces. I am very happy and fortunate to have made contact with Andres, Attila, Michael and the rest of the gang.

This coming Friday 26th, I will be going on a two week cruise out of Barbados and hope to be in Trinidad on the 9th of November for a brief 3-day visit.

I would like to make a trip to Mount St. Benedict and if possible to meet with you. Since I am totally unfamiliar with the surroundings, your suggestions regarding time and locations would be helpful.

Keep well and hope to hear from you soon.

Best regards, Stan

Hi Andres:

Thanks.

The reason I remember him so well is because he helped me with some English-into-Dutch translations of some of my letters to a pretty Dutch girl.

It so happened that I fell in love with a pretty little Dutch girl at the St. Joseph's Girls Academy down the hill (remember when they would come up to the Mount for our functions and dance parties?).

Anyway, ...I became pen-pals with her and Rudi Polderman would help me translate my letters into Dutch because her English was a bit weak.

If I remember correctly, Rudi wasn't at the Mount for very long.

Perhaps 2-3 years at best, towards the second half of the 60's?

Yes I could, but no, he is not in any of the photos I have seen so far.

Unfortunately, there are few pictures from the latter part of the 1960s onwards.

And, almost none from the 70s and 80s. Such a shame.

Hi Ladislao,

My responses are below in red next to the questions.

Dear Tony

No the circulars are flowing. the last one i got was 286!

We have sent out no.318 Saturday. I didn't get it.

Are you not getting them??? No I am not getting them.

Tell me the numbers and I shall send them to you. since 286!

How are things in Guyana??. worse than Venezuela you only now have Hugo Chavez, we had our Hugo Chavez since 1966 so we are mired deeper in the mess than you are, we are now recognised as one of the poorest countries on the planet. But the one good thing is that his recent defeat may temper his excesses but Burnham was never tempered and so we will never progress as a nation, his 1980 constitution, the constitution of a dictator keeps us in subjugation. it allows for an elected dictatorship, which even after Burnham died in 1985 continues to this day.

Have you visited Bartica?? Yes i was there about three weeks ago actually its getting bigger all the time there are a substantial Brazilian population there now, Brazil does not allow individuals seeking for gold, but we do; so the galimpeiros [not sure that i spelled that right] from Brazil are flooding the place here. One of my favourite places to have lunch when i am in the city is the Brazilian restaurant.

Any new photos? Not of the river, are you interested in anything else? recently this guy i know was crop dusting [you can see the wing of the plane] and took this aerial photo of my television broadcast operation here at Versailles.

What is your news page so that I may include its address in the Circular. www.tonyvguy.com

Any cleaning before Xmas?? You remember that from the commentary? that's incredible! sure Jewel [my wife] is cleaning the place but this time i hired a crew.

God bless. You too, Ladislao, be blessed.

Ladislao

(I might visit you to take a trip up the river with your yacht or boat. Ed)

To all my Abbey School Brothers I would like to say I hope the blessing of your god is with you thought this season and in the years to come.

We came from all different walks of life and bonded at the Abbey.

Today we range from Vagrants to multi-millionaires, but we share a common thread from the Abbey.

I am very grateful of all the lesson learned at that unique school, and today I am proud to be or associated with anyone who has been an Abbey Boy. God Bless, and lets keep the communications going.

About the TT pictures I was fortunate to have lunch with Winston Ramsahai, Keith Allen and a kisskidee that took me back to the Mount pictures enclosed.

Thank you for your good wishes for Peter.

Bar a few infections that they are still trying to get rid of, Peter is now in remission.

Thanks be to God!

However he still has to face 2 massive doses of Chemo Therapy, the harvesting of his blood cells and and finally the re-implant of these cells, followed by 3 months to bring him back up to par.

He is now walking again and though even shorter he's doing well.

His spirits are good and both he and his wife and family are surviving wonderfully well.

We are still praying and raising funds but everything is going well so far.

I told Chris about the re-union and he had already seen it in the papers but he says he is too old (!!!!!) and won't know anyone. !

Que lastima!

Love and best wishes to you and your family,

Dear Don

I shall give you some working tips for the Circular, basically to standardise the format and others.

Maybe we can get together soon.

I have only 175 emails to review in kertesz11, out of about 250 that I did have yesterday.

It is question of time.

I have all the missing Circulars in Draft and without photos that must be names coded and in most cases reduced to about 100kb, a photoshop work.

So out of the 175 emails I must get around 10 Circulars or more.

And of course out of the other mailing boxes about two more Circulars.

Do not forget to ask names for the photos, most of the guys I have not met, and I presume you have not either.

email address is essential.

No exchange kid available in Anguilla for my son?? It could be for before Xmas or other time.

God bless and good health

Hi Ladislao,

I have no idea how you do it.

Anyway, the only photos I have are the ones that you have already published in one of the Circulars.

New photos are an essential part of the Circular to increase interest.

You would have to give me some material and some tips on techniques to save time and minimise problems.

Then I could help by publishing some of the Circulars.

In the case of my Blog, Corruption-free Anguilla, I tried to do a new post every day. I have found that too much.

I now do one every other day on average.

Before I start this issue I would like to wish all of you a Prosperous New Year 2008 with lots of health and stress free. That all your wishes come true and that old friendships be reborn.

Feedback on REUNION 2007, and still waiting for a report, comments by one of the members of the committee. I am sure that there has to be something else besides the formal report. Naturally the Christmas holidays and the New Year´s celebration must have put a time out on the Commission´s work.

Once up and running, it must be profitable, in order to pay a lease to the church for its sport facility etc.

This kind of business takes the management and staff that are committed to sports in a professional way for they are the front line of what will make or break this type of business.

Sorry if I may sound a little negative with some of my comments, however we must not let emotions cloud our judgement,

I am also sorry to see the this place that made so many good sporting teams , and the confidence that sports give to the youths, were left in ruin for so long.

I am committed to invest in this project after a feasibility study has been done, and if this is the way the old boys want to go.

How come no body mention doing something down the Islands, what ever happened to that place??

I think that could be a really good place to develop, and could draw top dollar from tourist and locals looking for a private place, what do you think??? looking forward to comments

Dear Don,

I did look into the Blog and saw the photos.

I need names or I have to send the photos as UNKNOWN.

You seem to know the names as there is a first name but no last names.

In case you do not know the wife's name, no problem I shall use Alumni and wife in the code.

Maybe I missed something? So, please help me.

Yours are the first photos but I do not want to use UNKNOWN in the code or use the first name as identification.

How about the list of those that went?

Some said that there were expecting over a hundred persons???

Was the meeting at a hotel???

Dinner? Speakers?

Help?

Ladislao

Subject: October Reunion

Hello Ladislao,

I know that Salvador is going to give you a lengthy description of the meeting in Trinidad over the weekend of 27 October, so I shall be brief.

The most important news is that we agreed to found an Association of Old Boys as a legal entity. The Trinidad lawyers will advise on how this is best to be done. That will provide for election of officers, regular meetings, etc. It will ensure continuity of the institution.

Second, we agreed on a major social gathering on the weekend of April 19 and 20. The first day will be for the organisation's meeting and election of officers. The second date is for the social function. The date was chosen for two main reasons. First, the alternative dates were not convenient and were in the middle of the more expensive tourism season. Second, we were told the date would coincide with the Venezuelan holiday weekend, and more of those alumni might be able to join us.

Third, we elected the first officers. They are Joseph Bermont, Rudy Singh, Peter Sammy, Michael Dornellas, Winston Ramsahai, Stewart Henderson, Dennis Gurley, and Jon Golding. Their job is to get the organisation legally registered and to plan and implement the reunion in April 2008.

The pictures that I took are at "Don's Photos" under links in the right-hand column of the Blog: http://abbeyschool2007.blogspot.com/

I thoroughly enjoyed the reunion, and hope they will be more regular now.

Keep well.

Don

Gosh ! ... I am soooooooo proud of you all.

I really do not know what is going exactly regarding the preservation of Mount's lands, but it makes me feel so proud to see how you guys take care of the most beautiful memories of My life.

And then I notice that perhaps they are also Yours !!!

I was thrilled and sad at the same time to see the latest pictures of the football field, I so much enjoyed, seemingly abandoned.

And the pool, the showers.

It brought so many memories.

GOD bless you all.

Please take due note of my address and phone numbers in Florida.

Keep them and use them whenever you want.

A Mount Boy will always have a bed to sleep and a plate of soup at home.

My Brothers ......................................... The Mount Boys !

You make feel privileged and proud !

Dear John:

I believe that this confusion has arisen after having read Kertesz´s Mount circular.

The person in charge of a leasing and reconstruction of Mount´s sports complex is Bro. Rupert.

I know of this because he comes often to Venezuela and we have a close friendly relation, including Isaias. Bro. Rupert is a very close friend of the Tangs, my Trinidadian family.

The monks don´t want to sell or anything of the sort.

I understand the complex could be revamped and it would be of great service to the community as a whole and to the Abbey, specifically, as an important source of money.

This is what it is all about.

Please contact Bro. Rupert or the Abbot.

Pud was just a very important and fortunate contact with the government authorities after Bro. Rupert made the comment to him and Bro. Rupert being sort of despaired for the government not having answered after having they made an offer in the sense that I have mentioned.

This last august was in TT for a very short visit: a Tang´s wedding and a meeting with dear fat Pud.

I don´t have his new email but he can easily be reached in TT.

Hope this note clarifies things.

Do contact Bro. Rupert or his excellency the Abbot for further actual details.

Regards and promise to see you on my next visit.

All the best and God´s blessing to all Mount boys.

Manuel

Dear Friends:

Sometimes things don't work out the way we expected.

Lack of health ( " too f.... old ", as Isaias Farcheg would put it) was the main reason for my absence at the Mount Boys dinners 22/27th Nov.-

On the other hand, even though we live in the same country, when you reside here on Margarita Island, you sort of live in another country abroad, among other reasons, in this period of the year it is easier to get a flight to and from any other place, than from this island to Caracas and back.-

Nevertheless I want to congratulate you again Ladislao for the wonderful work, time and effort that you have given to this program.

On re-reading circular 307 I saw that you are trying to get hold of Jerry BAIN.

I wonder whether to that purpose the following numbers can be useful: (both Old Mount Boys with whom I had dinner in Pampatar some months back) :

DAVID BAIN (who lives in Pampatar) 0416-661.61.01 ; 0414-563.17.43

BRIAN GODDARD (who came to visit) 0416- 647.99.70.

Kind regards

Roberto Lipavsky (alias "pelo") class 1.958.

Dear Ladislao,

First of all I would like to wish you and your entire family a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year 2008 with good health and lots of luck.

Thanks a lot once more for all the productive energy which you have poured into the circulars of this year, which have helped to create an invisible interwoven network, which in turn, helped to create and to keep up the contact between so many of us MSB boys, scattered throughout this globe.

In February, I'll be in Caracas for a couple of weeks, so I'll gladly attend any meeting of the MSB boys which should take place.

I´'ll contact you per phone after arrival. (My wife and I will be flying over on February 2nd. )

Best regards till then

Csaba

Apreciado Ladislao:
